NASA to rename
headquarters for Mary W. Jackson, agency’s first female African American
Engineer. The announcement was made by the NASA’s administrator, Jim
Bridenstine on 24th June 2020.
Mary Jackson’s
contribution to the space program get recognition after her death in 2005.Mary
Jackson started as a research mathematician who became known as one of the
human computers at Langley. She worked under fellow “Hidden Figure” Dorothy
Vaughan in the segregated West Area Computing Unit. Margot Lee Shettery’s book
“Hidden Figures: The American dream and untold story of the Black Women
Mathematicians who helped win the Space Race,” was based on the story of Mary
W. Jackson which was later made into an acclaimed film; both(book&film)
were released in 2016.

in Virgina, United States.

National Committee for Aeronautics
recruited Mary W. Jackson in 1951.The committee was replaced by the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958.

In 1958 she became the first African
American female engineer at NASA.
NASA is a U.S.
government agency that is responsible for science and technology related to air
and space. The space age started in 1957 with the launch of the Soviet
satellite Sputnik.
Headquarters of NASA is
in Washington, D.C., United States.
